The Department of Water Management provides the City of Durham with safe drinking water while protecting the environment with superior wastewater treatment operations. This is a complex and growing department with the objective of maintaining high levels of efficiency, professionalism, ethical standards, and morale. With approximately 220,000 citizens and an extended water and sewer service area population of over 250,000, Durham also serves large institutional users located within the Research Triangle Park, as well as Duke University & NC Central University. Water Management is responsible for a $34 million operating budget, $222 million capital improvements program, and 333 employees operating within nine divisions: (1) Water Supply and Treatment, (2) North Durham Reclamation Facility, (3) South Durham Reclamation Facility, (4) Customer Billing Services, (5) Conservation, Industrial Waste Pre-treatment, & Cross Connection Control, (6) Plant Engineering & Maintenance (7) Water and Sewer Maintenance, (8) Administration & Finance, and (9) Utility Engineering.
