Description
The Instrumentation Manager will manage the mass spectrometry (MS) facilities, maintain all major instrumentation in the MS lab (pumps, DAD’s, MSD, vacuum, electronics, and controls), oversee day-to-day operations, train and assist users, and perform detailed analyses on samples submitted to the facilities. The manager will teach up to two courses/academic year (one/semester).
Job Description
Essential Functions:

Maintain and operate mass spectrometry instrumentation.

Provide instruction and training for users on the operation of instrumentation and the acquisition and analysis of data.

Collaborate with faculty and research groups on MS data collection and analysis.

Oversee day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including ordering supplies, troubleshooting instruments, scheduling users, writing SOPs, etc.

Perform routine maintenance/repairs, schedule major repair and preventative maintenance visits, maintain and update software.

Maintain a safe laboratory work environment in compliance with state, local and university regulations.

Maintain a working knowledge of state-of-the-art applications of instrumental techniques through periodic attendance at training sessions and workshops.

Assists others with writing peer reviewed articles.

Supervising Spectroscopy Teaching Assistants when provided by the Department.

Teaches up to two courses/academic year (one per semester) in support of the undergraduate and graduate programs.
Other Functions:

Provide support and training for other modern chemical instrumentation (GC-MS, LCMS, HPLC, UV-Vis, etc.).

Providing a fee for service function with outside companies and universities.
Requirements
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
-
Ph.D. in Chemistry and a minimum of 1 to 3 years of relevant experience.

Expertise should range from working with small organics (GC and LC) to protein digests.

Experience with Orbitrap, Triple Quad, Ion Trap, GC-MS, and HPLC instrumentation.

Experience with advanced processing software such as Mass Hunter, Proteome Discover, Xcalibur, ChemStation, OpenLabs.

Ability to communicate both verbally and written.

Ability to work as a member of a research team involving faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students and other scientists.

Knowledge of current developments in the chemistry literature appropriate to the field of research.

Ability to design and deliver course materials for undergraduate or graduate instruction, and to evaluate student performance.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Experience in training and maintaining an operational lab, negotiating service contracts, performing routine maintenance, scheduling repairs and preventative maintenance, updating software.

Background and experience with informatics soft-ware
