Description

The Division of Atmospheric Sciences at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to conduct research in its Environmental Analysis Facility (EAF). The EAF is a world-renowned laboratory equipped to measure chemical and physical properties of atmospheric contaminants and conduct laboratory and field air quality studies.

The post-doc will focus on and perform the following activities:

  • Conduct laboratory combustion experiments to measure emissions from NASA relevant fuels.
  • Design and test filtration modules for personal aerosol sampling.
  • Design, integrate, and characterize portable low-cost air quality sensor systems.
  • Conduct laboratory and field studies of aerosol and air quality characterization.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in atmospheric or environmental sciences, chemistry, mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering, or in an equivalent field (completed by the end of December 2021) from an accredited institution.
  • US Citizenship or lawful permanent residency in the US. 
  • Experience in laboratory and field studies, including experimental design, data acquisition, and data analysis.
  • Experience in instrument/sensor design, integration, and characterization.
  • Excellent English-language written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, fulfill project goals, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research and publish results in peer-reviewed literature.
  • Due to the current health and safety emergency declaration, anyone hired must receive a complete (and verified) COVID-19 vaccination series or an approved medical or religious waiver request as a term and condition of employment prior to any start date at any Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) institution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in operating and troubleshooting air quality instruments (e.g., aerosol generators, particle counters and sizers, and gas analyzers).
  • Experience in mechanical and electrical system design.
  • Experience in low-cost air quality sensors.
  • Familiar with LabVIEW, python, SQL, C/C++, and database management software (e.g., MS SQL and Access).
  • Experience in operating and troubleshooting analytical laboratory instruments (e.g., thermal/optical carbon analysis, ion chromatography, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry).
  • Experience in data retrieval/integration, statistical data analysis, and data mining/artificial intelligence.

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs; Standing and sitting for a prolong period.
