The Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) is a unique, cross-disciplinary instructional center that provides educational and training opportunities to develop skilled professionals for the biomanufacturing industry. BTEC’s audience includes NCSU students and professionals already involved in biomanufacturing or related industries. BTEC also provides bioprocess development and analytical services to a wide range of customers from academia and industry.

Senior Scientists at BTEC provide scientific direction for and teaching of NCSU undergraduate/ graduate courses and BTEC’s Professional Development Short-course Program. In addition, Senior Scientists support projects that are part of BTEC’s Bioprocess and Analytical Services Program.

Essential Job Duties Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Deliver courses to university students in subject matter related to biomanufacturing. Topics of particular interest include fermentation and cell culture for biopharmaceutical production and cGMP biomanufacturing.
  • Develop and deliver short courses to industry professionals in support of BTEC’s professional development program. Topics of particular interest include fermentation and cell culture for biopharmaceutical production and cGMP biomanufacturing.
  • Advise/mentor undergraduate/graduate students in bioprocessing projects related to developing courses and/or executing research.
  • Supervise scientists who will support development and execution of industry training and academic courses.
  • Train BTEC staff as needed on upstream processing.
  • Identify, source, and commission new equipment, particularly equipment needed for upstream bioprocessing.
  • Communicate as needed to service providers, clients, and collaborators within and outside the university.
  • Keep up with latest scientific and engineering developments in biopharmaceutical processing.
  • Write grant proposals that provide funding for technology development, educational initiatives, etc.
  • Publish and present, particularly on behalf of BTEC to communicate project objectives and status to various stakeholders.
  • Gain local (within the state) recognition.
  • Provide leadership to BTEC.

  • Ph.D. degree in science or engineering (Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or related discipline).
  • At least three years of hands-on experience in fermentation engineering, upstream bioprocessing and/or cell line development
  • Prior experience teaching at the college level and/or teaching industry professionals.
  • Hands-on experience in experimental design and execution in one or more of the following fields:
    • Fermentation microbiology of bacteria, yeast, or mammalian cell culture.
    • Operation of large scale (30 L+) fermentation vessels.
    • Optimization or automation of process control.
    • Genetic engineering of bacteria, yeast, or mammalian cells
